  • Third Street Music School Settlement’s Annual Concert was named in honor of Stowe C. Phelps in 1995 to convey Third Street’s appreciation of and deep gratitude for his service to the School.

Stowe was a member of Third Street’s Board of Directors for more than 30 years, serving as both President and Chairman, and then as Chairman Emeritus until he passed away in 2013.

Stowe’s support and guidance set the standard of what a good board member should be and should do. His leadership was marked by extraordinary diligence, care and joy.

For Stowe Phelps, Third Street’s students always came first. In recognition of his enduring commitment to these young people, to their well-being and to the development of their artistry and creativity, Third Street named this concert—traditionally the performing highlight of the year—in his honor.

The following words, written by Stowe decades ago, still ring true today:

Listening and viewing are totally different experiences from actually putting fingers on the keyboard, drawing a bow over a string, blowing a horn, or tapping a xylophone. They are different from applying paint with a brush to paper, or shapinga piece of clay. Sitting and watching a ballet, no matter how inspirational, cannot be compared to the revelation of moving, leaping, pirouetting, reaching, and turning one’s awkward body into an instrument capable of expressing beauty and aspiration. To enroll at Third Street is to engage in these discoveries. It is an active, personal experience of growth. And we believe that this rare, precious, challenging, and meaningful opportunity is the essence of Third Street.
